“The most beautiful & fashionable couple of Great Britain: David & Victoria Beckham...

David and Victoria Beckham are a hot item nowadays. How did they meet and fell in love with each other? Well, Victoria stepped into Beckham's life on Sunday, March 16th 1997.
The day before she and Sporty Spice Melanie C had watched Manchester United beat Sheffield Wednesday, 2-0 in a Premiership game. A couple of weeks earlier, the girls mingled with the players and guests after a game at Stamford Bridge where Beckham had scored United equalizer in a 1-1 draw. Victoria obviously enjoyed the game and accepted an invitation from the United directors to attend a game at Old Trafford. Victoria and Mel C went out onto the pitch to make the half time draw and in an interview broadcast on Independent Radio, gave perhaps the first clue that Cupid's arrow had landed.

"I'm here today to be a bad omen to Manchester United, so hopefully they will lose," joked Mel C. "But I'm not. I'm here to support them because I'm a Manchester United fan, big time," said Victoria. "There's a bit of a conflict of interests here, but as everybody knows I'm a big Liverpool supporter," said Sporty Spice. "Today's a very important day for both teams. Liverpool are down in Nottingham and I wish them luck." Victoria's knowledge of soccer might have been minimal but she did have her own ideas about the United side. "They're got the best set of legs. I'm just here to have a good day out, here with my friends, to support the side and wish them good luck." "She can't keep away from up north, she loves it up here," added Mel. And who was Victoria's favourite player? Please wait for it. "I can't tell you who my favourite player is. David Beckham is very good, Ryan Giggs is good too, but ooh aah Cantona is a bit cool isn't he?" Mel revealed that her eyes were for Anfield only, "My favourite player is Steve Mcmanaman and we've all got to admit that he's a fantastic player. Jamie Redknapp may be the best looking, but Macca's the best player." Victoria backed her pal up, "Steve's lovely looking. He 's cute. We like Steve."

Then Mel showed her superior knowledge of the game. "I think we've got some fantastic footballers in this country at the moment, at both Liverpool and Manchester United. They're the best." "But David Beckham ain't bad is he?" was Victoria's final contribution. The following day the two of them met and BINGO! They always ring each other their hand phones any chance they get. Victoria recalls being in the players' lounge on what was to be only their second meeting. "Unlike the other footballers who headed straight for the bar, David went straight over to his mum and dad. Someone who appreciates his family. I like that." On their first date when Victoria stood up to go to the toilet, so did Beckham. When she returned, he stood again. "At first, I thought there was something wrong and then I realized he was just being polite. I had never had anyone treat me like that. It was clear from day one he was a complete gentleman," recalls Victoria. Victoria became a regular at United games as they began to see more and more of one another and as their friendship blossomed into romance, the media pressure on them also increased. They never really talk about each other to the press, just briefly from time to time. Lonely Victoria admitted to sleeping in one of Beckham's old England shirts when away on tour because it helps her to feel close to him. Together they compare notes on fame and shop, dashing from Armani to Prada, buying each other Cartier trinkets, but beneath the homespun glitzy one suspects the relationship is sweeter and less contrived than it appears. He is clearly nuts about her, and damn those rumours that Max Clifford is behind the whole liaison, or the ones currently gathering credence in the music business, that the Spice Girls need an excuse to quit before they are toppled, and Posh's obsession with the hunky footballer is the subterfuge. Doesn't it make it harder to that they are both press fodder? "Yeah, but we understand the pressures. I'm a footballer and she's a Spice girl. It'd be silly if we did not think the media and the public were attracted to us. But we were just two normal young people going out together. I don't see myself as front-page material, but going out with her I'm going to get it. We realized it is something we must handle." "We encourage each other to avoid it or we laugh at it. She is more famous than me, anyway, we joked about who is more big time. It's nice, I like Victoria for herself, not for nothing else. I'd like her if she worked in Tesco," said Beckham. Would she return the compliment if he were plain broke Beckham from Essex? Possibly, but the looks and the money can't hurt. He is un-embarrassed, and naive, about the wealth. "Footballers are no different to a milkman or a dustman, we're just in the limelight and get paid a lot of money." said Beckham.

Victoria's mother seems to have accepted Beckham as he is the sort of young man any parents might be delighted to meet if their daughter brought him home. "She wanted a life-size cupboard cut out of me," said Beckham who was quick to learn Rule One: Do as your future mother-in-law says! Beckham and Victoria have become the country's most photographed couple since the heyday of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana. Camera's would pick out Victoria, sitting in the visiting director's box at Old Trafford, often with Beckham's parents, or wrapped up in a warm coat at some far flung football ground watching her boyfriend through tinted spectacles. Private time became a thing of past, and when Victoria spent the night at Beckham's house several months after their meeting, the paparazzi were lurking within telephoto lens distance, waiting for her to leave. Pictures filled the front pages of the tabloids, rumours of a pending marriage spread, and the flames were fanned one Saturday when the couple decided to get a bit on their own back. On Saturday 30th August 1997, before the game David had collected the club's Player of the Year award as Victoria watched from her seat in the grandstand. Both of them wore a gold ring on the third finger of their left hand. That day, United beat Coventry 3-0, but the main page story of the famous "Pink" was: "Is Beckham spliced to his Posh Spice?" The Sunday newspapers were full of the gossip about the marriage of the hottest couple. What happened that afternoon may have been a bit of fun for the young couple, but on Saturday January 24th the first step towards the real thing happened. Beckham proposed, and in the romantic setting of Rookery Hall Hotel, in the Cheshire lanes of Worleston near Nantwich, Victoria accepted. They officially announced their engagement the following day. They realized it would be impossible to keep quiet, so a press conference was held at the hotel and the two of them posed for pictures showing off the expensive rings they had exchanged. They said little. Victoria revealed: "It is just what I wanted, and it was a big surprise." Cameras clicked as Beckham stood coyly behind his fiancee, and Victoria was reported to have said: "I am the happiest girl in the world. I am with the man I know I am going to grow old and wrinkly with." The next morning the papers had a field day. the pictures were splashed everywhere together with stories which gave the date of the wedding as anything ranging from "the end of the season", or "after the World Cup", even though it had been officially announced as being scheduled for the summer of 1999. Let's talk about the ring for Victoria. Beckham came into his favourite jewellery shop on his own to choose a ring. The assistant manager of the shop said that Beckham knew what Victoria liked and they went through the range for the ideas, but he designed the ring himself. When Beckham and Victoria were called to see the ring, they dressed casually in sports jackets and baseball caps and they couldn't keep keep their hands off each other. They both gave each other six carat diamond engagement rings. Even a good couple sometimes has argument too. They were debating about what house to buy. He showed her a house he liked, but she did not agree. She would not even enter the house. Victoria wants a house with a wall all around it. This did not bother Beckham. He would follow Victoria anywhere, just as long as his lovely future wife is happy. Victoria was pregnant in 1998 and she has born a baby boy called Brooklyn in March 1999. In 2002, Victoria was pregnant again and she has born another baby boy called Romeo in September 2002. It's so cute when the couple are asked about each other. Victoria will only refer to Beckham as "my boyfriend" and Beckham only refers to Victoria as "that girl". That girl that everyone is talking about. They never seem to refer to each other by name. But now this must have changed as they are married. Beckham and Victoria have held a wedding ceremony at romantic Luttrellstown Castle in Dublin on Sunday, 4th July 1999. They have invited a lot of guests to their wedding ceremony, including Beckham's team mates and other Spice Girls. Their wedding ceremony is being called the celebrity wedding of the year.
